The story of the tea festivals

Perfect South is a co-founder of the Sydney and Melbourne Tea Festivals in partnership with our friends from the Rabbit Hole Organic Tea Bar.

Here is the story of how we ended up creating two big annual events for Australia’s tea lovers…

Corinne from the Rabbit Hole and I decided to meet for tea one day in Erskineville in 2013.  Corinne was a founding member of the tea body AASTA and I had just joined as a member, so we thought we’d it would be nice to meet up and talk all things tea.

During our catch up we both lamented over the fact there were no large-scale public events for tea in Sydney. There were all kinds of festivals and events for other drinks – like coffee, wine, craft beer and spirits, but nothing for tea. It bothered us no end!

Personally, as a tea drinker, I would have loved to go to a tea festival and as a new business owner, without a physical shop front, I needed a platform to showcase my teas and a tea event would be perfect.

Inspired by the thought of a huge celebration of tea in our own city we, along with our partners, took matters into our own hands and launched the inaugural Sydney Tea Festival in August of 2014 at Carriageworks.

The event was attended by 5,500 people and we had over 40 stallholders. It was a whole lot of fun (and work) and a big success. The following year we had over 50 stallholders and 10,000+ people in attendance, which surpassed all of our expectations.

Spurred on by the success of the Sydney event, in 2016 we decided to launch the first Melbourne Tea Festival at The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, right in the heart of the city.  And from there, who knows what will happen.

We both continue to run our own growing tea businesses and are excited about the bright future of our favourite drink.
