Five years, 155 stallholders and 25,000 tea lovers later, the Sydney Tea Festival is back at Carriageworks on Sunday, 19 August. We are so excited and proud to have co-foundered this event and can’t believe we’re already five years in! We’ve tried to continuously develop the festival’s format each year and really focus creating an awesome day where both tea novices and connoisseurs alike can enjoy and discover Australia’s best tea purveyors, blenders and growers. This year has been especially fun to dream up!
New festival features include The Tasting Table, an area where tea drinkers can participate in intimate group tastings and masterclasses with tea purveyors, and a tea and food pairing degustation dinner held at Automata in Chippendale, in honour of the festival’s 5th birthday. We’ve also invited our friends from Archie Rose Distilling Co to create tea-infused cocktails on offer that their bar.
Then there’s the collaboration with Sydney contemporary artist, Elliott Routledge (aka Numskull), to give the festival a fresh new look and commemorate the festival’s milestone birthday. Known for his large scale, abstract wall murals, as well as having exhibited at galleries across Australia and internationally, Elliott brings his signature colourful shapes and bold compositions to the collaboration.
The festival offers tea lovers plenty to explore through a marketplace of more than 70 stallholders. Loose-leaf tea, as always, is the hero of the festival with the market space showcasing creative and quality-focussed tea brands that place a strong emphasis on leafy grade, specialty tea including rare, pure teas; exotic blends; high-altitude teas from abroad; chai teas made from time honoured family recipes; Japanese matcha; Australian grown teas; and healthy herbal tisanes.
Visitors can taste their way through the festival’s tea stalls with their porcelain tasting cup in hand, and relax in the festival’s Brew Lounge. For something hands-on, tea lovers can hit the DIY Tea Blending Station to create a bespoke brew from a range of teas and dried herbs, flowers, fruits and spices.
Plus, don’t forget the array of tasty treats on offer from pastries, doughnuts, macarons and marshmallows, to vegan, gluten-free, and paleo snacks, as well as lunchtime food truck bites.
There’s also opportunities to learn more about tea, through interactive experiences and a program of workshops and talks.
Phew! That’s a lot to take in. In short, it’s an awesome day for tea lovers!
